Heron offers the only national service to the UK academic
community for copyright clearance, digitisation and delivery of book extracts and journal articles.
HERON can supply full text files under the CLA's Higher Education Scanning Licence, including a coversheet providing bibliographic and licensing details, or, where usage is not covered by the CLA licence, HERON will obtain permission from the rightsholder. Heron also brings experience and strength in negotiations with publishers and other rightsholders.
Heron also holds a resource bank of archived
pre-digitised material. It includes copies of material requested through Heron which are available for rapid re-use (subject to permission being granted for use). Permission to store these items has been given by the rightsholders concerned.
As an additional service, Heron has produced 'PackTracker' - a course resource management tool.
Integrated with HERONweb, PackTracker creates and records information about all paper and digital items and their status. PackTracker can also be used to generate reports of usage for the CLA's scanning licence, to restrict access to material by permission dates and upload your requests to HERONweb.
"We wouldn't have considered attempting this without Heron, it's just too complicated" - Mike Berrington, Head of e-Services, Nottingham Trent University |
